Guys, this Spring and Summer are going to test your willingness to try new things- at least with your fashion. And I urge you to follow those, perhaps uncomfortable, trends just for a while.
The biggest changes are going to be happening a little to your south, scratch that, a lot to your south- your pants, mainly around your ankles. First things first you’re going to want to show a little ankle these upcoming seasons. Ever heard of the “man-pri?” Probably not, because it’s not a commonly used term, but get used to seeing these products of evolution. I’m not talking about anything complicated and scientific, these are just capris for men! They will leave you looking cool and fresh while feeling cool and fresh. Its going to grab those women’s attention when you’re at the beach playing volleyball with the buds shirtless- but those aren’t shorts you’re wearing, those are man-pris! The most popular hybrid since the Prius!
One of the best things about the man-pri is that you don’t actually need to go out and buy any new pants; just roll up your jeans to about mid calf, or maybe even lower, and you have a casual, fashionable, and great new look. You can even transform a pair of chinos or other casual pants into man-pris for a classy, yet comfortable look. Throw on some sandals, sneakers or even a loafer and you are styled and ready for the warm seasons.
This trend will work best with a straight-leg or a skinny pant. I know most men are scared of the skinny, and I was too for the longest time, until I figured out that they look fantastic as a man-pri. You may have to try on something new and get a feel for the change, because I can guarantee you’ll be able to tell the difference from your usual boot cut jeans. Just embrace the change for a couple of months and by the time Fall hits, you’ll be over it and back into those old familiar boot cut jeans you loved so much. So guys, get ready to show some ankle and get ready to love it!
May flowers are only brought by April showers. What will you be wearing to make sure that you’re experiencing the most stylish showers? It’s all about the trench!
This year there is a trench out there calling your name, I urge you to answer! You must pick out that trench that is absolutely you! There are so many different colors and styles out there, but only one calls out to you. Are you the daring, yet classy type of guy who loves to be the one people look at? Go for a navy or military green trench! Are you the business guy who needs an overcoat to match every suit in your closet? Black, goes with everything. Or are you that traditional Casablanca type of guy that will only buy a khaki trench? There are a ton of khaki ones out there and they are fantastic, but maybe try this years best neutral–grey! No matter who you are, you have quite the selection to choose from, let the trench call to you.
Now, how are you going to wear this said trench? I don’t think the “Inspector Gadget” style should ever come back unless you are Inspector Gadget, so have fun when you belt it. For a more fitted look–and it should ALWAYS be fitted–try belting it behind you. Whether you knot it back there or use the buckle, it’ll look great, fitted and carefree. If you would rather belt it in front, try a knot once in a while, it’ll give you that “I can get ready in a minute but I can also make myself look damn fine in that minute” look that we all really want.
While you’re researching your beloved trench you may find yourself stuck on the length. Always remember, if you’re a shorter fellow never go past mid-thigh; the longer the trench the more you’ll look like a 5 year-old playing in dad’s closet. If you’re a taller guy dont buy anything shorter than mid-thigh but never cover the knees unless you plan on streaking at a college football game (which, as entertaining as it seems, you must remember it is illegal). Casablanca may have had great style for the 40s, but today people would just wonder what you’re hiding under there.
Clothes are meant for you to have fun with, so play around with different colors, styles and ways of wearing trenches. And to transition into the summer, when the days are nice and breezy but the nights can get a tad chilly, try wearing it open and the sleeves rolled up a bit; that’ll keep you cool and warm all summer long. There are so many trenches on the market that you will find the perfect one to protect you from the April showers, no doubt. Just please don’t wear yours’ with rain boots!
As we rang in the new year we also rang in new trends. The past year had brought us the military trend, but not that camouflage trend that almost everyone in the world seemed to follow in the early 2000’s; we saw “military” in its classiest form yet. With the breast pockets, epaulets on the shoulders, and a slimmer form; it was hard not to rock the military trend in 2010. Dress it up with a skinny tie and tucked into some nice flat-front pants or dress it down with a pair of distressed denim and boots–either way, you’d be rocking the biggest trend of 2010. And while this trend hasn’t died yet, it has grown a bit old and the fashion world is craving something new and consumers have already purchased every color available in every military shirt available.
As the latter months of 2010 crept up on us we started to notice this military style becoming more casual and a little less, well, military. The solid colors that you could find anywhere were now looking boring and out of date; patterns were being incorporated into the now bland military style. Polka-dots had a brief shine, stripes also faded in and out for a mere moment, but what really stuck around was… plaid. Oh yea, the plaid that everyone loved in the 90’s was about to make its comeback on 2010s biggest trend! But this plaid isn’t the same plaid you and your dad wore to go hunting, this is classy plaid. Bet you never thought that could happen. Gone are the days of flannel, if you need to stay warm you layer a thermal under that “classy plaid” and you rock it. You’ll see big plaid, small plaid, and even checker board plaid in this new year. But what will really be the biggest change is going to be the color combination, no doubt you’ll see a lot of interesting combos; like bright blue and red incorporated into a gray and black plaid, monotone patterns of grays, blues, and purples, and heck even orange will have a brief comeback.
All of these new takes on old trends is just going to be the start of 2011s biggest fashion trend, the hipster. But don’t think for one second that the 2011 hipster is going to be dirty and smelly like the 1970s hipster. The great thing about this current young generation of 20 to 30 year-olds is that they all care too much about what they look like and how they smell.
So as you shop around for your 2011 wardrobe updates always remember to keep it classy but with a twist. No doubt I will have a lot to write about this year, and none of it will disappoint!
